Is this website run or voted by blind people? The 3 so called winners look NOTHING like the subject, even Hugh Jackmans mum would be hard pressed to see any likeness, most of the artists who submitted a picture other than the 3 winners must be gutted at such an outcome!

  • jonesmac2006, 9 months ago

I admire your honesty and guts to say that, plusidol

I would have found a more diplomatic way to say it, Plusidol. I think you're going to make some people mad with that one. But I have to agree that the likenesses were not very strong on this contest. The second-place winner looks like him to me, but I'm not seeing the likeness on the other two, personally. Normally, I'm a fan of Rich Conley's art, but here, I think he missed the mark. The problem is, I don't see him in most of the other entries either. Mind you, I've never attempted to caricature Hugh Jackman. Maybe he's just really difficult to get right. Personally, I think votes like this are the result of people letting flashy renderings blind them to how good or bad the likeness might be. I'd be interested to see how differently the votes would come out on many caricature contests, here and at Caricaturama Showdown 3000, and other places, if no one were allowed to post anything more than rough sketches.

Hi Plusidol, Your thoughts on the winning entry is pretty true and glaring too... The rendering overshadows the likeness... Mine being one of it too... But I guess this happens when you let the public to vote. Many a times a particular artist gets a big fan following and he seems to overshadow the emerging ones too... Not anybody's mistake again... These things are bound to happen when its open to all. Either a voting panel needs to judge the entries or the voting needs to be made on certain parameters like likeness, rendering, skill etc...

  • PLUSIDOL, 9 months ago

Guys, I'm not blaming the artists at all, we all know how hard certain subjects are to nail, but surely it's down to the the voters

  • Bharat KV, 9 months ago

I guess one reason could be that the activity on this website has dropped bigtime... during the first 10 or 15 contests the submissions were close to 30-50, these days its 10 or less than that... I dont see those winners participating anymore either... Gotto bring in more artists and popular subjects... The engagement factor of Witty is not like before... Probably the Facebook contests are eating it up... Admins, let us know if we can help in anyways...

  • jonesmac2006, 9 months ago

I tried to capture the attitude as well as likeness, ran out of time, kept it simple, i like several on here and i can see a lot of effort went into the entries

  • Heidi WittyAdmin, 9 months ago

You are absolutely correct Bharat. The participation has declined overtime and it is also my guess the Facebook contests are more popular nowadays. When we first started, I could only recall 2 caricature contests running on a regular basis: Wittygraphy and E-Caricatures. Now there are quite a few contests on FB to compete with. While we have a much better way to organize, operate, and present contests, FB does have a massive user base.

I believe artists who are doing contests love to have competition and always want to see how they measure against the best. The quality attracts participants which will further improve the quality. That gives FB a huge advantage. But I know the admins overthere are having a hard time to run contests as well. Who likes to manually count hundreds for votes? Not scalable right? No easy way to display winners, etc.

I feel we would have the best of both worlds if we can get contests with that many entries on WIttygraphy. We believe caricaturists community needs that kind of place. We want to provide that place and folks like Euan is helping us in a big way to keep Wittygraphy going. The best way everyone can help would be to reach out to their network and let their friends know there is a contest going on Wittygraphy. That is the best compliment you could give to us.

But here is a plan to put the mojo back into our contest. If each participant in the last few contests could convince 2 caricaturists they admire to attend the next contest, we will have 40 really high quality entries. Repeat it then we will have 120 entries. And one more time, we will have 360 entries which would be much more than any FB contests today. It looks very doable to me if we as a community acts together. We will back on top in a 2 months. What do you say?
